Kaizer Chiefs Confirm Asanele Velebayi’s Debut Timeline

Kaizer Chiefs fans will soon get their first look at new signing Asanele Velebayi, after weeks of delays caused by a transfer dispute with Cape Town Spurs. Interim coach Khalil Ben Youssef revealed that the 20-year-old winger should make his Betway Premiership debut within the next two weeks, once the final clearance paperwork is processed.

The transfer saga has dragged on since early 2024, when Chiefs reportedly offered R4 million plus two players for Velebayi. Spurs rejected the deal, demanding a higher fee. The situation escalated after Spurs were relegated to the amateur ranks, which — under PSL rules — made the winger a free agent. Chiefs announced his signing in August 2025, but Spurs contested the move in court, arguing they should not lose their star player for nothing.

The PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber had already voided Velebayi’s Spurs contract, a decision Spurs attempted to challenge through arbitration. Despite the legal wrangle, Chiefs remain confident it won’t delay his registration. “The final paperwork is all that’s needed. Asanele is fit, enthusiastic, and ready,” Youssef confirmed.

The youngster has already started training with his new teammates in Johannesburg and has impressed with his quick adaptation. Renowned for his speed and attacking flair, Velebayi is expected to add much-needed creativity and depth to Chiefs’ frontline as they push for trophies this season.

If the process goes smoothly, supporters could see him in the gold and black jersey before the end of October, potentially ushering in an exciting new chapter for the Soweto giants.
