Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly preparing to part ways with Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel at the end of the current season, as the club begins to reshape its squad for the next campaign.
According to sources close to the club, the Brazilians have reached an informal agreement to release Esquivel, who has struggled to cement a place in the team since his arrival in 2023.
It’s understood that the 24-year-old could return to his former club, Talleres de Córdoba in Argentina.
“For now, the decision is as good as done. Esquivel won't be staying on at the club for next season. He is one of the players that the team is believed to be releasing, and apparently he would be returning back to his club in Argentina,” a source revealed.
The creative midfielder was signed on a four-year deal by Sundowns in an ambitious move to bolster their midfield depth.
However, after making just a handful of appearances, he was loaned back to Talleres in a bid to regain form and playing time.
While Esquivel made some impact upon his return to the Argentine outfit, he has failed to convince the Sundowns technical team upon his reintroduction to the squad during the January transfer window.
Another insider revealed that while the decision to release him has been made in principle, the club is still navigating the contractual details, particularly the financial settlement involved in terminating his deal early.
“Of course Sundowns have to negotiate a pay out if they are releasing him. He still has a contract and that’s what they are working on with the player’s representative to see how best they can work out his release,” said the source.
Esquivel’s exit would free up a valuable foreign player slot and potentially allow Sundowns to bring in new talent, as the club continues to scout South American markets for quality reinforcements.
As of now, Mamelodi Sundowns have not issued an official comment on Esquivel’s future, but sources suggest that an announcement could be made once financial negotiations are concluded.
With the club pushing for domestic and continental success, all indications are that Sundowns are planning an overhaul to ensure stronger squad depth and more effective contributions from their foreign signings.
