Goal Scoring and Traditional Number 9 Role
Matty frequently serves as the central point of the attack, causing problems for opponents by either holding the ball up or making runs behind the defense.
When required, he can also be deployed on the wing, where his speed and precise crossing ability make him a significant threat.
A composed and efficient finisher, Warhurst scored 24 goals and registered two assists in 30 appearances during his debut season with the Under-18s in 2023/24.
He will aim to replicate that impressive performance with the EDS in the 2024/25 season.
Manchester City has consistently produced standout talents like Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, and Oscar Bobb. Now, another young player is beginning to make his mark: Matty Warhurst.
The 17-year-old featured for City in the latter stages of their 3-1 defeat to Barnsley in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday. Despite the disappointing result, Warhurst’s season up to this point has been far from underwhelming.
So, who exactly is Matty Warhurst?
The Stalybridge-born forward is having an impressive campaign. He has scored five goals in just three appearances in the Under-18 Premier League this season. In addition, Warhurst made an appearance in the 5-2 UEFA Super Cup victory over Red Star Belgrade, which is an Under-19 competition, further highlighting his potential.
It’s clear that the coaching staff at Manchester City's Elite Development Squad have high expectations for Warhurst, as he’s being given opportunities to play above his age group. The EFL Trophy, which is an Under-21 competition, is another platform where City is testing the teenager's capabilities.
Warhurst is versatile in attack, capable of playing in multiple positions across the front line. This season, he has featured as a centre-forward twice, scoring four goals in those matches, and he also netted once on the left wing in his solitary appearance in that role.
If Warhurst continues to develop at his current rate, there’s a strong possibility he could earn a place on the bench under Pep Guardiola before the end of the 2023/24 season.
